Self-Reflection

Self-Reflection

Firstly, the N307 course was something very new to me and upon seeing it as part of my schedule for the current semester I was left wondering what it really consisted of and if it would be difficult. At the end of the semester I improved my listening and writing skills as well as my communication skills.
Secondly, I could very much imagine using these skills that I have improved in the future. Seeing as the new skills that I have learned and the skills that I improved on will be used in a workplace environment in the future. This is very important as work will be a big part of my life later on.
In addition, the biggest challenges in business/work communications for me are maybe making new friends with people I am going to be working with in the future. Because I think it is difficult to have a friendly relationship with a professional colleague.
Next, the things I can do to address these challenges in the future would obviously be the trial and error method. If first you don’t succeed then try and try again. This is because making friends with colleague’s I think is very important for the long and short term.
Finally, the N307 course I think is a very important course for students to take because for example it helps with developing C.V’s for people who never had the chance to write one before. And this is a very important aspect to be learned.

I.                   Overview

This essay will focus on one of the biggest companies in the world, and that company is called ‘General Motors’. A full history of the development of the company will be given, and I will look at the growth of the company since its creation. The mission statement, vision and goals will be discussed. The way in which the company changed in response to globalization/environment/financial crisis will be outlined. Statistics about the growth of the company will be presented in report form and show revenue, employee growth, investments and future growth of the company. The company has faced a number of problems in the past, some even as big as filing for bankruptcy. I will explore why the company faced these problems and how they faced them.

II.                Introduction

·         General Motors was founded by a man called William C. Durant. In 1908
·         It is a company that designs, builds and sells cars, trucks and automobile parts around the world
·         I am going to focus on the history and development of the company throughout the years. Mainly about revenues, employee numbers and of course General Motors before and after they filed for bankruptcy in 2009. I am also going to talk about the reorganization of the company.
·         The reason why I chose this company is because General Motors is one of the biggest companies in the world and for its fantastic history.

III.             Development
·         General Motors was developed by William C. Durant in 1908 and a year later managed to sell 25,000 cars and trucks.

·         William Durant started to bring many companies in to General Motors which included Buick, Pontiac, and Cadillac which makes sales rise by 60%

·         In 1921 General Motors managed to account for 12% of the United States car market

·         In 1979 General Motors was employing 620,000 workers in the United States alone making it the biggest private employer in the country

IV.            Growth And Revenues

·         As of 2012 General Motors estimated revenue is 152.26b
·         Employing 202,000 people and does business in more than 157 countries
·         General Motors produces cars and trucks in more than 37 countries
·         22% of products are sold in the U.S

V.               Pre And Post 2009

·         Before Filing for Bankruptcy in 2009 General Motors total assets were 91.04b. and in 2012 they were 149.42b
·         In 2009 they shed Saturn and Pontiac
·         From 1908 to 2009 they were known as General Motors Corporation, they changed their name to General Motors Company in 2009 and are presently known as that.
·         Employees in the US before 2009 numbered 91,000 and after that date were 68,500

VI.            Reorganization
·         On June 1st 2009 General Motors Corporation filed for bankruptcy in the Manhattan New York federal bankruptcy court. GM's bankruptcy marks one of the largest corporate bankruptcies in U.S. history which forced a reorganization period.
·         Many Brands were sacrificed. Some of these brands are Hummer, Pontiac, Saab, and Saturn

VII.         Conclusion

·         General Motors has come a long way from owning a couple of companies and selling a couple of thousand cars and trucks to becoming a company that produces and sells millions of cars each year and is a  multi-billion dollar company
·          General Motors has possibly faced everything a company of its stature can face in its fabulous tenure but still manage to stay on top even after filing for bankruptcy as they started earning profits just a year after that.

Meeting Reflection

Meeting Reflection

A part of LSEC-N307, Personal communication class, I was assigned the task of preparing for a meeting with my class colleagues, in which we had to talk about Student Success and how Core skills are associated with that. My group was able to prepare a successful meeting of many points raised.
Firstly, I think in general meetings are a very effective way of having a professional discussion with colleagues about specific problems that people might face in the work place and have to deal with as soon as possible, so in my opinion meetings are a good thing.
The role that I was given in the meetings was the minute’s taker. The role of this person is to record as much important information as possible for example how, why, when and by whom prior to the next meeting. I accomplished developing an organized meeting.
The difference between my practice meeting and the one chosen for me, was that the practice meeting was more laid back and easier to talk about as we had a bit of time to prepare for it, as oppose to the one chosen for me because there was a limited time to prepare for that meeting and I didn’t know what subject we were going to talk about it.
Finally, in the future as a manager I would recommend organizing meetings that are thoroughly prepared as this helps while the meeting is taking place, because colleagues would know each other’s roles and would come to meetings well prepared.
