I.                   Overview

This essay will focus on one of the biggest companies in the world, and that company is called ‘General Motors’. A full history of the development of the company will be given, and I will look at the growth of the company since its creation. The mission statement, vision and goals will be discussed. The way in which the company changed in response to globalization/environment/financial crisis will be outlined. Statistics about the growth of the company will be presented in report form and show revenue, employee growth, investments and future growth of the company. The company has faced a number of problems in the past, some even as big as filing for bankruptcy. I will explore why the company faced these problems and how they faced them.

II.                Introduction

·         General Motors was founded by a man called William C. Durant. In 1908
·         It is a company that designs, builds and sells cars, trucks and automobile parts around the world
·         I am going to focus on the history and development of the company throughout the years. Mainly about revenues, employee numbers and of course General Motors before and after they filed for bankruptcy in 2009. I am also going to talk about the reorganization of the company.
·         The reason why I chose this company is because General Motors is one of the biggest companies in the world and for its fantastic history.

III.             Development
·         General Motors was developed by William C. Durant in 1908 and a year later managed to sell 25,000 cars and trucks.

·         William Durant started to bring many companies in to General Motors which included Buick, Pontiac, and Cadillac which makes sales rise by 60%

·         In 1921 General Motors managed to account for 12% of the United States car market

·         In 1979 General Motors was employing 620,000 workers in the United States alone making it the biggest private employer in the country

IV.            Growth And Revenues

·         As of 2012 General Motors estimated revenue is 152.26b
·         Employing 202,000 people and does business in more than 157 countries
·         General Motors produces cars and trucks in more than 37 countries
·         22% of products are sold in the U.S

V.               Pre And Post 2009

·         Before Filing for Bankruptcy in 2009 General Motors total assets were 91.04b. and in 2012 they were 149.42b
·         In 2009 they shed Saturn and Pontiac
·         From 1908 to 2009 they were known as General Motors Corporation, they changed their name to General Motors Company in 2009 and are presently known as that.
·         Employees in the US before 2009 numbered 91,000 and after that date were 68,500

VI.            Reorganization
·         On June 1st 2009 General Motors Corporation filed for bankruptcy in the Manhattan New York federal bankruptcy court. GM's bankruptcy marks one of the largest corporate bankruptcies in U.S. history which forced a reorganization period.
·         Many Brands were sacrificed. Some of these brands are Hummer, Pontiac, Saab, and Saturn

VII.         Conclusion

·         General Motors has come a long way from owning a couple of companies and selling a couple of thousand cars and trucks to becoming a company that produces and sells millions of cars each year and is a  multi-billion dollar company
·          General Motors has possibly faced everything a company of its stature can face in its fabulous tenure but still manage to stay on top even after filing for bankruptcy as they started earning profits just a year after that.
